About the owners
Great Country Farms is a long-established family farm in Loudoun County owned and operated by the Zurschmeide family, who have been farming in the region since the 1970s and started Great Country Farms in 1993 as an extension of their agricultural operations. Mark Zurschmeide serves as the farm’s Chief Farm Operator, overseeing daily operations and new business development, while Debbie Zurschmeide-Schoeb focuses on customer experience and event coordination across the property’s offerings. The family’s multi-decade commitment to farming in the county underscores the farm’s deep roots in local agriculture and community engagement.
History of the venue
Great Country Farms began in 1993 when the Zurschmeide family put down roots on their Bluemont property and started the farm with a Community Supported Agriculture program, delivering produce to homes across Northern Virginia. As the operation matured through the 1990s and 2000s, it expanded from a CSA into a full agritourism destination with U-Pick fruit and vegetable fields, family activities, seasonal festivals, and farm market offerings. Over the years, the farm has earned recognition for its innovative approach to farming and maintaining agricultural activity in a growing county.
Winemaking philosophy
Great Country Farms is a 400-acre working farm dedicated to both food production and experiential agri-tourism, blending U-Pick crops, a farm market, and play-oriented attractions. The farm grows seasonal produce that visitors can pick themselves and sells a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, and value-added products in its market, while also supporting regenerative agricultural practices such as crop rotation and soil health management. With an emphasis on connecting families to farm life and the food they eat, Great Country Farms integrates crop production with interactive activities that reach beyond traditional farm stand offerings.
