About the owners
Founded by Stephen and Shannon Mackey, Notaviva Farm Brewery & Winery is the world’s first winery to pair its beverages with music—a concept born from Stephen’s lifelong passion for sound, storytelling, and human connection. An award-winning entrepreneur, creative producer, and former HGTV reality show star, Stephen has built a career bridging artistry, technology, and hospitality. Together, the Mackeys transformed their Loudoun County farm into a place where creativity, emotion, and craftsmanship intersect. Their vision extends far beyond the glass—each wine and beer is designed to evoke a specific mood, memory, or moment, much like a favorite song.
History of the venue
What began as an abandoned cattle farm became the stage for one of Loudoun’s most innovative beverage experiences. Drawing on Stephen’s background in professional audio and digital media, the Mackeys founded Notaviva with the goal of connecting wine and music on a sensory level. Since its founding, Notaviva’s wines have earned international recognition, and founder Stephen Mackey was named Loudoun County’s Entrepreneur of the Year in 2012. Set amid the rolling hills of Western Loudoun, Notaviva blends the intimacy of a family-run farm with the creative energy of a live performance space—offering visitors a tasting experience that is equal parts emotional, educational, and entertaining.
Winemaking philosophy
At Notaviva, wine, cider, and beer are composed like songs—crafted to resonate with the listener as much as the taster. Each beverage is inspired by a particular genre or emotion, from the “Vincerò” Viognier paired with acoustic rock to the “Waves of Kilkee” Irish Blonde Ale inspired by Celtic melodies. The Mackeys’ goal is to create drinks that capture the essence of music’s emotional pull, transforming each sip into a multisensory experience. This philosophy—equal parts artistry, science, and soul—defines Notaviva’s place as one of Loudoun County’s most imaginative and emotionally engaging wineries.
