About the owners
After years of traveling through wine regions across the U.S. and Europe, Mike and Gerri Fritz developed a passion for the intimate character of small, boutique wineries. In 2016, they turned that inspiration into reality, purchasing a farm in Virginia and transforming it into a working vineyard. Starting with red varietals and later adding whites, they now cultivate six grape varieties on the property. Mike’s winemaking philosophy centers on bringing out the best in Virginia’s estate-grown fruit. He tailors his methods to each grape’s character, believing that great wine begins in the vineyard itself. Visitors will find a hands-on, thoughtful approach that reflects both the couple’s curiosity and their respect for the craft.
Winemaking philosophy
At Carriage House Wineworks, winemaking begins in the vineyard. Owners Mike and Gerri Fritz focus on crafting small-batch wines from estate-grown Virginia fruit, carefully tending six grape varieties on their family farm. Mike’s winemaking approach is adaptive and fruit-driven, allowing each vintage and varietal to express its natural character. Guided by the belief that the best wines start in the vineyard, Carriage House emphasizes quality over quantity, producing wines that capture both the individuality of Virginia’s terroir and the personal touch of a boutique producer.
