About the owners
Domaine Fortier is co-owned by Stephen Fortier and Jennifer Volk-Fortier, who together guide the winery’s vision, growth, and character. Stephen leads the vineyard and winemaking operations, drawing on his certificate in enology from UC Davis, WSET training, and a scientific background in systems engineering and chemistry. Jennifer oversees marketing, business relations, and sales, supported by her studies in Washington State University’s Wine Business Management program and her WSET experience. Alongside creative director Chris Lang, the Fortiers bring complementary expertise and a shared commitment to crafting thoughtful, expressive Virginia wines.
History of the venue
Nestled in the Catoctin Valley between Short Hill and Furnace Mountain, Domaine Fortier is a boutique winery rooted in the landscape of Lovettsville. The Fortiers purchased the 34-acre property in 2018 and engaged industry experts to study the site’s terroir, guiding the selection and placement of their vines. Today, 10 acres are planted—primarily with vitis vinifera varieties—and 2023 marked the winery’s first harvest of estate-grown fruit. While the vineyards matured, Domaine Fortier produced its wines using Loudoun-grown fruit beginning in 2020, crafting early vintages at Walsh Family Wines while continuing to refine its estate vision.
Winemaking philosophy
Domaine Fortier’s winemaking centers on producing small-lot, hand-crafted wines defined by elegance, balance, and a strong sense of place. Their philosophy begins in the vineyard, where sustainable practices guide every decision, and continues in the cellar with techniques designed to harmonize fruit, acidity, tannin, alcohol, and the natural character of each vintage. Working closely with Nate Walsh and winemaker Kent Arendt, the Fortiers apply a blend of scientific precision and artisanal care to yield expressive wines that reflect the Catoctin Valley terroir while maintaining stylistic continuity year after year.
