About the owners
Otium’s current chapter began in 2021 when Anita Tanamala, inspired by the sweeping vineyard views and the vines first planted in 2007, envisioned a winery dedicated to leisure and renewal. She brought her philosophy to life under the name Otium—Latin for “leisure”—a reflection of her belief that wine should be savored in an atmosphere of relaxation and joy. Under Anita’s leadership, Otium has expanded plantings in Loudoun County and infused the estate with fresh energy, balancing tradition with a modern spirit.
History of the venue
The property is part of 70 acres at Tranquility Farm, an estate rich with history and lovingly restored structures that anchor the winery’s storybook setting. Otium officially opened in 2021, building on the foundation of vines established in 2007 and reimagined with new vineyards, hospitality spaces, and accommodations. Today, the venue offers a timeless blend of scenic beauty and heritage, tucked among Virginia’s scenic byways and framed by the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Winemaking philosophy
Otium positions itself as a boutique winery where the experience is as central as the wine itself. With a focus on crafting exceptional wines in limited quantities, the philosophy emphasizes both old-world inspiration and contemporary hospitality. Every bottle is meant to complement the estate’s serene surroundings, while tastings, private celebrations, and overnight stays reflect Otium’s guiding principle: to create a place where guests can slow down, connect, and savor the leisure of Virginia wine country.
