About the owners
Sunset Hills Vineyard is shaped by the vision of owners Mike and Diane Canney, who planted their first vines in 1999 with a commitment to making fine Virginia wines rooted in care for the land. Their approach blends a love of the countryside with a dedication to thoughtful stewardship, creating a winery experience that reflects both personal passion and a deep respect for the region’s agricultural heritage.
History of the venue
The vineyard sits on a former Amish farm, where rolling hills and a beautifully restored 145-year-old Amish barn now anchor the estate. Over time, the Canneys transformed this historic landscape into a working vineyard across several western Loudoun County farms, preserving its natural beauty while creating a welcoming destination for wine lovers. The result is a property where heritage architecture, pastoral scenery, and modern winemaking come together seamlessly.
Winemaking philosophy
At Sunset Hills Vineyard, the philosophy begins with a simple principle: great wine starts with the right fruit. Their winemaking is grounded in meticulous estate farming and a strong commitment to environmental responsibility. Sustainable agriculture guides every stage—from minimizing pesticides and nurturing beneficial insects to using solar energy and supporting native habitats. This blend of careful viticulture and mindful production creates wines that reflect both the character of their vineyards and the winery’s belief in “making great wine for the greater good.”
